Fishing in New Jersey, A brief look

Though small in size New Jersey fishing is supported by contrasting environments and few states can match the variety of fishing opportunities. New Jersey fishing types range from bluefin tuna and striped bass in offshore waters to American shad and chain pickerel inland. New Jersey has two major fishing rivers and the Atlantic Ocean, plus over 300 lakes and impoundments. New Jersey freshwater fishing is most notable at Big Flat Brook in Sussex County. Its upper tributaries contain native populations of fish, and the lower stretches of tributaries offer a liberal stocking of brook, brown and rainbow trout from April through June. The best-known fishing stream in southern New Jersey is the Manasquan, a popular spot amongst New Jersey fly fisherman.

New Jersey saltwater fishing abounds with its location along the Atlantic Ocean. A wide variety of marinefish habitats are available to the sport fisherman, including tidal rivers and bays, miles of surf with and without jetties and the broad continental shelf studded with natural reefs ad wrecks. Not to mention the submarine canyons and lope waters which are only beginning to receive the big-game fish attention it deserves. Striped bass are probably the most highly rated gamefish in this area. The warm spring sun warms the water over the flats of Barnegat and other shallow fishing bays, and by mid March bass can usually be taken by drifting these bays and casting bucktails with light spinning tackle. Surf-fishing, primarily with bait, reaches a peak in April. New Jersey big game fishing anglers can find school tuna and white marlin offshore.
