Fishing in Montana, A brief look

Perhaps the most popular trout fishing destination, Montana offers prime waters and surreal natural beauty. The best Montana fishing waters are located in the western portion of the state. The majority of Montana's good trout streams are off the three large rivers: the Missouri River from the mouth of Judith River upstream; the Yellowstone River from the mouth of Clark Fork upstream and Clark Fork off the Colombia from the Idaho state line upstream. Ennis Lake, in the course of the Madison River, offers trout in the morning and evening for great fly fishing in Montana.

The Missouri River, known as the 'Mighty Mo,' is one of the more famous tributaries for excellent fishing in Montana. Above the Judith River and even above Great Falls, anglers will find quality rainbow trout and brown trout fishing. Two tributaries are noteworthy throughout these parts, they are Big Spring Creek and Warm Spring Creek. Another tributary of the Missouri River system is the Yellowstone River. Rock Creek is a beautiful little fishing stream which has been left in its natural state, but trout tend to be smaller in this section. Also, the Yellowstone River has excellent, typical Montana fishing, from Big Timber to the Yellowstone Park boundary. Trout in the section between Livingston and Big Timber average larger than trout between Livingston and Gardiner.
